Dark circles

While dark circles are talked about a lot, especially on the social network Tiktok, when an influencer decided not only to take them on but also to showcase them, where did they come from?

There are several types of dark circles, of different colors.

The causes of dark circles

The ring is a "brown or bluish circle that sometimes surrounds the eyes" according to Le Robert, in anatomy we can also hear: jugo-palpebral furrow, contrary to common doubt, it is a masculine name!

First of all, it seems important to remember the differences between the skin of the eyelid (palpebral skin, located above and below the eye) and the skin of the face.

  • The epidermis is very thin: about 0.05 to 0.1mm against 1mm on the face.
  • The dermis too: 0.5mm against 1mm.
  • There is less hyaluronidase, collagen and the hydrolipidic film is also thinner.

Then there are different types of dark circles:

  • Blue or vascular dark circles:

These are the ones that are characterized by a bluish or purplish tint under the eye. They are generally caused by poor blood circulation, the skin being very thin, the blood pigments come out and create this bluish color. Fair skin may be more prone to it, and genetics involved. But lifestyle is also involved, tobacco, alcohol or lack of sleep can be aggravating factors.

Here are some techniques to limit them:

  • An active ingredient that is interesting is vitamin A and its derivatives which stimulate the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen, for example the vitamin A from MCCM will be perfect for that!
  • Another active to test is caffeine which will provide vasoconstriction to limit the appearance of the vessels.
  • A healthy lifestyle is obviously necessary: rest, food...

Brown or pigmented dark circles:

This type of dark circle frequently affects dark skin and is of genetic origin. Melanin is deposited on the surface of the dermis and creates a stain around the eye. Certain pathologies or allergies of the skin can also be responsible for it. It takes a long time to process.

  • Active ingredients against hyperpigmentation: for example vitamin C from MCCM can regulate the action of melanocytes or even glycolic and azelaic acids.
  • As with all hyperpigmentation, sunscreen is necessary!

Hollow or structural rings:

These usually depend on the bone structure of the face. Depending on the light, they will be more or less visible, as a shadow will be created under the eye. They will be accentuated by significant weight loss, or aging, the skin sagging, logically, with age and creating a puffiness effect under the eyes.

  • The only really effective thing to do are injections of hyaluronic acid, for example the Stylage S is perfect for dark circles.
  • Little things to do like avoiding salt or raising your pillow at night to improve lymphatic drainage.
